XDF: Workshop – Sydney Erlikh, Deb Goodman & Kris Lenzo (USA) Unfolding Disability Futures

Workshop: Wheelchair dance workshop

Our workshop will be taught by teacher and choreographer Deb Goodman, dancer/teacher/choreographer Kris Lenzo and dancer/teacher/choreographer/scholar Sydney Erlikh. Our workshop will include personal introductions paired with a movement chosen by each participant. Dancers will have the opportunity to inform the group about any specific needs, injuries and requests concerning their bodies. We will stress the importance of moving in a safe manner, listening to and honoring our bodies and generally taking care of ourselves and each other. 

Deb will lead us in a breathing warm-up paired with gentle stretching.

Kris will lead us in a shoulder/neck/upper body warm-up.

After introductions and Deb’s and Kris’ warm-up exercises Kris will discuss setting up and adjusting a wheelchair for dance. Kris will demonstrate various ways of moving and balancing in a wheelchair. Kris will do some partnering with Deb and/or Sydney to show some possibilities of movement. 

We will use mirroring, diamond/swan, shadowing, weight sharing(push and pull) to explore dance vocabulary.

We will break into groups, create work  and show it to each other.

We will finish in a circle with a chance to reflect and share.
